Frozen mackerel imports fall by 8%, prices remain flat

Frozen mackerel imported into Korea in April 2023 was 8,751 tons, up 23% from 7,092 tons in the same period last year, and the amount of imports was USD 19.32 million, up 13% from USD 17.11 million the previous year.

Total imports in April were 28,326 tons, down 8% from 30,858 tons the previous year.

By April, 23,079 tonnes of frozen mackerel were imported from Norway (82%), 3,359 tonnes from China, 1,209 tonnes from Taiwan, and 515 tonnes from the Netherlands.

As for the import unit price of frozen mackerel by country, Norway is the highest at USD 2.22/kg, followed by Germany with USD 2.11/kg.

The average unit price in April was USD 2.21/kg, down 8.5% from USD 2.41/kg the previous year.

The wholesale price of frozen mackerel distributed in Korea is 67,000 won to 70,000 won per box of 20 kg, and has maintained a flat rate since February 2023.

According to statistics, the price starts to rise every year from June, when stocks run out.
